Daily Flood It

How to play

Pick a colour and the patch in the top left corner changes to it, swallowing any neighbouring squares of that colour as it goes.

Keep going until the whole board is one colour. The outlined area is the patch you currently control.

Shapes

If the colours are hard to tell apart, Show shapes puts a distinct symbol on every square so you can play by shape instead.

The number to beat

Each board carries the shortest fill our own solver could find. Beating it is genuinely possible, which is the point of showing it.

Why There Is No Perfect Answer Here

Unlike the other games here, nobody can tell you the best possible score for a flood it board. Finding the shortest fill is NP hard, which means that for a board this size there is no known method that reliably finds the true minimum without an enormous search.

So the number shown is not par and it is not claimed to be optimal. It is simply the best our solver managed, searching greedily from many different starting choices. If you beat it, you really did beat it.

The useful instinct is to resist grabbing the biggest patch every turn. A colour that captures less now but reaches further across the board usually pays for itself within a few moves.
