Daily Sokoban

The rule

Push every crate onto a target. You can only push, never pull, and only one crate at a time.

Tap a square next to you to step that way. Arrow keys work, so does a swipe, and Z undoes.

Each level says the fewest pushes it can be done in. Finishing is the goal; matching that number is the harder game.

Where it goes wrong

A crate pushed into a corner can never leave it, and a crate flat against a wall can only slide along that wall. Those two facts cause nearly every dead end. Before you push, ask what the crate will be able to do afterwards rather than whether the push itself is possible.

Undo is not cheating here. Sokoban is a puzzle about seeing consequences, and the usual way to see one is to walk into it.

In your hands

Sliding pieces around each other in a space with no room to spare is what One Way or Another does in wood. The rest are in sliding puzzles.

Every Level Can Be Done

These are built backwards. The finished position comes first, with every crate already on its target, and the generator then works outwards by pulling crates, which is exactly a push run in reverse. Anything it reaches can therefore be solved, because undoing the pulls is a solution. Nothing here is a dead end before you start.

It also means the difficulty is known rather than guessed. The search spreads out from the finished position one push at a time, so when it stops, the distance it has travelled IS the fewest pushes that level can be done in. Pulling crates about at random instead gave levels of eight pushes that mostly undid themselves.

More to Play

There are twenty four daily sudoku variants, a hashiwokakero, a numberlink, a kakuro and a pentomino board.

If you like a puzzle that yields to patience rather than luck, that is exactly what a good interlocking puzzle asks of you. See the 6 Piece Cross, or the rest of the collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Sokoban?

Push every crate onto a target. You can only push, never pull, and only one crate at a time.

Is Sokoban free to play?

Yes. There is a new sokoban here every day, free, with no account and nothing to install. It plays in the browser on a phone or a computer, and it remembers where you got to.

Can every puzzle be solved?

Yes. Levels are built backwards from the finished position, so replaying those moves in reverse is always a solution and no level is a dead end. The page also tells you the fewest pushes it can be done in.
