Collection: Dr. Volker Latussek
Dr. Volker Latussek is a German mathematician and puzzle designer who has earned a quiet, fearsome reputation in the packing puzzle world. He approaches puzzle design with the precision of a mathematician, and the result is a body of work that sits among the hardest packing puzzles in the world.
Why I love Dr. Volker's work
Dr. Volker is brilliant. He's a mathematician by training, and you can feel it in every puzzle. He spent over two years developing his FERMAT puzzle just to ensure exactly one valid solution out of countless near-misses. His "Flop" series and the Collatz puzzle take their names directly from mathematical concepts. His pieces don't just slide into boxes - they thread into place through restricted openings in ways your spatial reasoning isn't prepared for.
I'll be honest: his puzzles are among the hardest packing puzzles I've ever encountered. They're brutal. They will defeat you for hours, then days, then weeks. When you finally find the solution, it feels less like a victory and more like a mathematician finally letting you understand the proof.
That's why I love them.
What the puzzle community says
Puzzle Pusher has reviewed many of his designs and consistently highlights the mathematical elegance under the difficulty. ZenPuzzler reviewed his Collatz puzzle - named after the unsolved 3n+1 mathematical conjecture - and documented the hours of attempts it demanded. His wooden originals are produced primarily by Pelikan Puzzles in the Czech Republic, in small editions that collectors track closely.
Where to start in his catalog
I currently carry Shrinking Soma, an anti-slide take on the classic Soma cube concept that applies Dr. Volker's mathematical precision to a familiar starting point. It's a great entry into his work - challenging without being immediately impossible.
I'm working on bringing more of his designs to the store. If there's a specific Latussek puzzle you'd like to see here, let me know.
FAQ
Who is Dr. Volker Latussek?
Dr. Volker Latussek is a German mathematician and puzzle designer best known for creating some of the most demanding packing puzzles in the modern puzzle world. He uses mathematical precision to engineer puzzles with exactly one solution, often spending years on a single design.
Why are his puzzles considered so hard?
Honestly, I can't fully explain it - I'm not a mathematician. What I can tell you is that his puzzles defeat me in ways other packing puzzles don't. You can see the mathematical precision in something like his FERMAT puzzle, which he spent over two years developing. But the actual reason a Latussek puzzle is so hard is something you feel before you can describe it.
Do you sell the wooden versions?
No, we produce them in 3D printing, since we aim to make great designs as available as possible. Pelikan Puzzles in the Czech Republic produces wooden editions in small runs for collectors, and Dr. Volker has given us his blessing to make the plastic versions you see here.
Will more Latussek puzzles be added?
I can't promise it, but I'm working on it. Dr. Volker's designs are some of the puzzles I most want to share with my customers, and I'm gradually adding what I can.
If you enjoy Dr. Volker's work, also explore puzzles by Osanori Yamamoto, Frederic Boucher, and Stewart Coffin - some of the other modern designers whose puzzles I'm honored to carry.
