Collection: Yasuhiro Hashimoto
Yasuhiro Hashimoto is a Japanese puzzle designer best known for elegant packing puzzles with beautiful sequences. His 4L Puzzle won a Jury Honorable Mention at the IPP 2015 design competition, and his Karakuri packing puzzle earned the same honor at IPP 2023. His Bucolic Cube is widely cited as one of the cleanest 3-piece cube assemblies in the modern packing world.
Why I love Yasuhiro's work
Yasuhiro and Osanori Yamamoto sit at the top of modern Japanese packing puzzle design, but their methods are different. Osanori picks a concept and goes deep into it - dozens of variations exploring the same idea from every angle. Yasuhiro is the opposite. He explores. Every Hashimoto puzzle feels like he's chasing a new idea, a new geometry, a new kind of sequence. You never quite know what a new Yasuhiro puzzle is going to be until you hold it.
That restless variety is what makes his catalog feel alive. His puzzles look elegant, often almost minimal, and they consistently win recognition at IPP design competitions for good reason.
Meeting Yasuhiro in Tokyo
I had the pleasure of meeting Yasuhiro in Tokyo. He's a very humble, pleasant person - the kind of designer who downplays his own achievements even while reviewers around the world are calling his work brilliant. He gave me his blessing to 3D-print his designs and share them with my customers.
What the puzzle community says
PuzzleMad has reviewed several of his designs and consistently highlights the elegance under the difficulty. Cubicdissection has produced premium wooden editions of his 4L puzzle. His IPP Honorable Mentions in 2015 and 2023 are recognition from the international puzzle design community itself.
Where to start in his catalog
I currently carry 4L Puzzle, his IPP 2015 Honorable Mention winner. Four L-shaped pieces - two slightly different pairs - have to fill a box accessed through an L-shaped opening in the lid. It looks like it should be easy. Reviewers have spent weeks on it.
I'm working on bringing more Yasuhiro puzzles to the store. If there's a specific one you'd like to see, let me know.
FAQ
Who is Yasuhiro Hashimoto?
Yasuhiro Hashimoto is a Japanese puzzle designer known for elegant packing puzzle designs and beautiful solving sequences. He has earned multiple Jury Honorable Mentions at the IPP design competition (2015 for 4L, 2023 for Karakuri) and is widely respected in the modern Japanese packing puzzle community alongside Osanori Yamamoto.
What makes a Hashimoto puzzle different?
Variety. Where some designers go deep into one concept, Yasuhiro explores. Every new puzzle of his feels like a fresh idea - a new geometry, a new opening, a new sequence to discover. His designs are typically elegant and minimal in piece count, with difficulty that hides under a calm surface.
Which Hashimoto puzzle should I buy first?
4L Puzzle. It's his IPP 2015 Honorable Mention winner and a perfect introduction to how he thinks - four pieces, an L-shaped opening, and a solve that takes most people far longer than they expect.
Do you sell the wooden versions?
No, we produce them in 3D printing, since we aim to make great designs as available as possible. Wooden editions of Yasuhiro's puzzles have been produced by makers like Cubicdissection for collectors. Yasuhiro has given us his blessing to make the plastic versions you see here.
Will more Hashimoto puzzles be added?
I can't promise it, but I'm working on it. Yasuhiro's catalog is full of designs I'd love to share, and I'm gradually adding what I can.
If you enjoy Yasuhiro's work, also explore puzzles by Osanori Yamamoto, Frederic Boucher, and Dr. Volker Latussek - some of the other modern designers whose puzzles I'm honored to carry.
