コレクション: 3 Piece Puzzles

Three pieces is where mechanical puzzles start to get interesting. There is room for a real trick, but few enough parts that you can hold the whole puzzle in your head while you work on it.

Where to start

The 3-Piece Cross is the gentlest way in, a small burr rated Easy. Loach Bed is an easy first packing puzzle: three pieces, one box.

The middle of the range is where most of these sit. Three-Piece Block and Shinobi are about making a shape, and Fish Tank, Trivial and Slidely Trivial are packing puzzles where the box fights back.

For a harder three, try Microma or Petit Ring, both rated Hard. The three-piece TICs, like TriTIC and TriadTIC, are a good introduction to turning interlocking cubes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 3 piece puzzle easy?

Some are. The 3-Piece Cross and Loach Bed are rated Easy, but Microma and Petit Ring are rated Hard. Fewer pieces means fewer things to try, not fewer ways to get stuck.

What does 3+1 mean?

Three pieces plus a box, frame or tray. The extra part is not something you assemble, it is the space the pieces have to fit into, and it is usually what makes the puzzle hard.

What is a TIC puzzle?

A Turning Interlocking Cube - or TIC - is a 3D mechanical puzzle where pieces must be rotated in a precise sequence to disassemble and reassemble a cube. What makes TIC puzzles special is that although every single one ends in the same shape, the sequence of moves to get there is completely different each time. Same cube. Totally different journey. Every TIC you pick up is a new challenge you haven't solved before.
