Collection: 4 Piece Puzzles

Four pieces is the sweet spot for a lot of puzzle designers. It is enough to build a genuinely hard puzzle, and few enough that every piece matters. Most of the puzzles here are rated Hard.

Where to start

Grip 4L and Wild West are rated Medium and make the best first four. From there, Four Fit, Turbulence and the Jigsaw Traffic Puzzle are packing puzzles rated Hard, and the Multi-Grain Burr is a four-piece assembly that looks far simpler than it solves.

The hardest are 4L by Yasuhiro Hashimoto and MINIMA Tower. Both are rated Expert: four pieces and a box, and much harder than they look.

Four-piece TICs make up a big part of this collection, from TicToc to QuantumTIC.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are four-piece puzzles so hard?

With four pieces there are enough possible arrangements to hide the one that works, but few enough parts that a single wrong assumption about one piece stops everything. 4L is a good example: three pieces go in easily and the fourth will not.

What does 4+1 mean?

Four pieces plus a box, frame or tray. The extra part is not something you assemble, it is the space the pieces have to fit into, and it is usually what makes the puzzle hard.

What is a TIC puzzle?

A Turning Interlocking Cube - or TIC - is a 3D mechanical puzzle where pieces must be rotated in a precise sequence to disassemble and reassemble a cube. What makes TIC puzzles special is that although every single one ends in the same shape, the sequence of moves to get there is completely different each time. Same cube. Totally different journey. Every TIC you pick up is a new challenge you haven't solved before.
