Pack 4 Jigsaw Pieces Into a Frame That Fights Back

Jigsaw Traffic is a 3D-printed plastic packing puzzle by designer Samuel Cook. The goal is simple to state: fit 4 jigsaw-shaped pieces inside a restricted frame. Getting there is another story.

The frame has a designated entrance and internal cutouts. Neither can be used in the final position of the pieces. There are guide lines etched inside the frame to show you the target space - but knowing where the pieces need to end up and actually getting them there are two very different problems.

Rotations are allowed. That sounds like a relief. It is not.

Quick Summary

  • Type: Packing puzzle
  • Pieces: 4 jigsaw-shaped pieces + restricted frame
  • Material: 3D-printed plastic
  • Key rule: Entrance and cutouts are off-limits for the final orientation
  • Rotations: Allowed
  • Size: 90mm x 90mm x 11mm
  • Designer: Samuel Cook

The Mechanic

The jigsaw piece shape is not decorative. It creates interlocking protrusions and recesses that interact with the frame in ways a simple rectangle never would. Every piece you place shifts your options for the next. The entrance and cutout restrictions eliminate the obvious approaches early, which means you are solving a geometry problem with fewer degrees of freedom than you expect.

Jigsaw Traffic draws inspiration from two respected names in the constraint puzzle world: Koichi Miura and Haym Hirsh. Miura's influence shows in the packing challenge structure - tight spatial constraints, no wasted space, solutions that feel almost impossible until they suddenly are not. Hirsh's influence lives in the piece shapes themselves, which carry that distinctive interlocking logic that makes each placement count.

Samuel Cook has combined both lineages into something that feels fresh. This is not a tribute puzzle. It is a real packing problem that earns its difficulty honestly.

Best For

  • Constraint and packing puzzle enthusiasts who want a compact challenge with real depth
  • Collectors who follow the work of Koichi Miura or Haym Hirsh and want to see their design ideas extended by a new voice
  • Industrial designers and architects drawn to tight geometric problems where shape and space interact in non-obvious ways
  • Puzzle collectors building a set around designer lineage and traceable creative influence

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "entrance and cutouts off-limits" actually mean?

The frame has an opening used to load the pieces and internal cutouts visible inside the frame. In the final solved position, no piece can occupy or rest in those areas. The pieces must fill only the restricted interior target space marked by the guide lines.

Are rotations really allowed?

Yes. You can rotate any piece in any direction. This expands the solution space - but the entrance and cutout restrictions still apply regardless of orientation, so it does not make the puzzle easy.

How difficult is this puzzle?

It is harder than it looks. Four pieces sounds manageable. The jigsaw geometry and the placement restrictions combine to make the solution space much smaller than expected. Most solvers will spend significant time on this one.

What material is Jigsaw Traffic made from?

Jigsaw Traffic is 3D-printed plastic.

What are the dimensions?

90mm x 90mm x 11mm.

FAQ

Do You Ship Worldwide?

Yes. I ship anywhere. Orders typically arrive in 1-3 weeks depending on your location and how customs is behaving.

How Long Does Processing Take?

Some puzzles are produced on demand in our studio in Czech Republic. Processing usually takes 3-5 days before your order ships. During busier seasons it may take a bit longer.

Do Puzzles Come With Solutions?

Usually not. Sometimes you can find the solution on my YouTube channel. If not, feel free to reach out for hints!

What If I Get Stuck?

Good. That's the whole point.

But if "stuck" turns into "frustrated and not having fun anymore," email me. I'll send you a hint if you want a nudge. No judgment. Some puzzles took me days. A few took weeks. Some took months. Some took years. And some I have never solved - and that is part of the appeal.

Returns & Exchanges

Yes. You have 30 days. If the puzzle isn't right for you, send it back in the condition you got it and I'll refund you. If something arrived damaged or wrong, tell me and I'll fix it. Please be patient as we're a small team!

Are These Good Gifts?

People LOVE buying our puzzles as gifts. They're physical, they last forever, they don't need batteries, and they create a real moment - the person sits down, struggles, laughs, eventually solves it. That memory sticks.

If you're gifting, check the difficulty rating and pick something one notch below what you think the person can handle. Easier than you'd guess is usually the right call.

How Are the Puzzles Made?

All the puzzles are made with the help of my partner Puzzle Guy and his 3D printing studio in Czech Republic.

What Is a TIC Puzzle?

TIC stands for Turning Interlocking Cubes. They're a family of puzzles where wooden pieces interlock and rotate into a cube shape. The solve isn't just sliding pieces - you have to find the right rotations, in the right order. They're some of my favorite puzzles in the store.

Why Is Everything Turquoise?

I grew up near the sea in Israel. When life got loud or overwhelming, that's where I went to reset. Sit, watch the water, breathe. Things would settle.

The turquoise on this site isn't a branding choice I picked from a swatch. It's that color. The one I still see when I close my eyes and think of the place that calmed me down. I want you to feel a small version of that when you pick up a puzzle - a quiet moment, hands busy, head clear.
