A sequential discovery puzzle does not hand you everything at the start. You get a closed object and one thing that moves. Working that out gives you a tool, the tool opens the next step, and the next step gives you something else. The puzzle teaches you how to solve it while you solve it.
It is the most story-like family in mechanical puzzling. A burr asks you to hold geometry in your head. A sequential discovery puzzle asks you to pay attention, try things, and notice when something has changed.

Burr Bot by Andrew Crowell is the one to begin with. It is a burr and a discovery puzzle in the same cube: the sticks you can see are only the opening move, and the robot has swallowed something you need to get back out. It took a Jury Honorable Mention at the 2021 Nob Yoshigahara Puzzle Design Competition.
